After a clean move, buy a pullback into the 61.8 to 65% Fibonacci retracement zone, with the stop below 78.6% and the old high as the target.

The idea

Fibonacci retracements divide a move into levels at 23.6, 38.2, 50, 61.8 and 78.6%. The zone between 61.8 and 65% is nicknamed the golden pocket and is especially popular in crypto.

The strategy waits for a clean move up, draws the levels from its low to its high, and places a buy in the golden pocket, with the stop under the 78.6% level and the target at the move's high or beyond.

Step by step

The rules

Setup

  • A clear impulse move from a swing low to a swing high.
  • Fibonacci retracement drawn from the low to the high.

Entry

  • A limit buy at the 61.8% level (the top of the golden pocket).

Stop-loss

  • Just under the 78.6% level.

Target

  • The move's high, or the 127% extension.

Filters that help

  • Prefer pockets that line up with another level: old resistance, a gap, a moving average.
  • Skip it if the pullback is fast and violent.

Why it can work

A pullback of around 60% keeps the trend's structure intact while giving a much better price than chasing. Because so many traders watch the same levels, orders tend to cluster there, which can make the levels act as a self-fulfilling zone.

Whatever the reason, a pullback of around 60% of a move is a sensible place to look: deep enough to offer a good price, shallow enough that the trend is still intact. The stop under 78.6% marks the point where most of the move has been given back.

Worked example

A stock rises from $93.00 to $103.00. The 61.8% retracement sits at $96.82 and the 78.6% at $95.14. A limit buy at $96.82 with the stop at $95.00 risks $1.82 a share.

The high, $103.00, is the target: $6.18 away, about 3.4R. Risking $100, that is 54 shares.

When it works, when it fails

Works best

In trending markets with clean impulses, where the level also lines up with other support.

Struggles

When the move is a reversal rather than a pullback: price slices through every level. Drawing the levels from different swing points gives different answers.

Common mistakes

  • Choosing the swing points after the fact to make the levels fit.
  • Buying every Fibonacci level on the way down.
  • Treating the levels as magic rather than as a rough zone.

Variations

Optimal trade entry
The ICT version: the 62 to 79% zone, used with a market structure shift.

What the evidence says

Evidence: Popular, untested

Widely used, but no rigorous public testing. An idea to test yourself.

There is no evidence that markets respect Fibonacci ratios for any natural reason, and we know of no rigorous public study showing an edge for golden pocket entries after costs.

The levels may work partly because many traders watch them. Treat the zone as a reasonable pullback area to test, not a law.

Questions

Should I buy at 61.8% or wait for a reaction?
A limit order at 61.8% gets the best price and fills on fast moves that never look back. Waiting for a reversal candle in the zone filters some failures, at a worse price.
Which swing points should I use?
The clearest swing low and swing high of the move you are measuring. Choose them before price reaches the zone, and never move them afterwards to make the levels fit.
What is the golden pocket?
The zone between the 61.8% and 65% Fibonacci retracement levels of a move.
How do I draw Fibonacci retracements?
From the swing low to the swing high for an uptrend (the other way round for a downtrend). The levels are percentages of that move measured back from the high.
Why is 61.8% special?
It comes from the golden ratio. There is no proof markets follow it; its use in trading is mostly convention, which may make it self-fulfilling at times.
