What it means
Big orders can't be filled at once without moving price, so institutions split them up and look for liquidity. That need is the core idea behind Smart Money Concepts.
In practice
Institutions account for most of the volume, so their buying and selling creates the larger trends. They cannot hide their footprints entirely: strong one-directional moves, defended levels and sudden reversals after a run of stops are the traces chart readers look for.
Reading where liquidity sits, above obvious highs and below obvious lows, is an attempt to see the market the way a large trader must. The aim is to trade in the direction the large orders are pushing.
What to watch for
Smart money is a model, not an inside view. Nobody outside the firm knows what an institution is doing or why, and many of its trades are hedges or rebalancing with no opinion on direction.
