The idea

An iron condor is four options. You sell a call above the price and a put below it, collecting premium, and buy a further-out call and put as protection. If the index stays between the two short strikes until expiry, all four expire worthless and you keep the premium.

The protective options cap the worst loss at the gap between strikes minus the premium, which makes it the defined-risk cousin of the short strangle.

Watch it play out

Illustration, not a real chart.

Step by step

The rules

Setup

  • An index with liquid options, on a period without major scheduled events.

Entry

  • Sell a call and a put roughly 3% from the price (around 0.20 delta), and buy a call and put further out (around 0.05 delta).

Stop-loss

  • Close or adjust if the index reaches a short strike, or if the loss reaches a set multiple of the premium.

Target

  • Keep most of the premium at expiry, or close early at about half the maximum profit.

Filters that help

  • Avoid holding through central bank decisions or budgets.
  • Size so the maximum loss is a small share of the account.

Why it can work

Index options have usually been priced for bigger moves than followed. Selling both sides collects that overpricing, and indices spend much of their time inside a range a few percent wide.

The protective wings matter on the worst days, when a short strangle could lose many times its premium.

Worked example

An index stands at 5,000. You sell the 5,150 call and 4,850 put and buy the 5,200 call and 4,800 put, collecting 18 points net. The worst case is the 50-point gap minus 18: 32 points.

The index ends the month at 5,020, between the short strikes: all four expire worthless and you keep the 18 points. Had it closed at 5,250, you would have lost the full 32.

When it works, when it fails

Works best

In quiet, range-bound markets with options priced for more movement than arrives.

Struggles

In sudden large moves. Wins are small and frequent, losses less frequent but larger, and a few bad months can erase many good ones.

Common mistakes

  • Selling strikes too close to collect a bigger premium.
  • Holding through events that move markets.
  • Letting a tested side run to the maximum loss without a plan.

Variations

Iron butterfly
Both short strikes at the current price: more premium, a narrower profit zone.

What the evidence says

Evidence: Researched

Published studies exist. Results depend on the details and on costs.

Cboe tracks an S&P 500 Iron Condor index. A 2016 study of its options-selling indexes found returns broadly similar to the S&P 500 with lower volatility and smaller drawdowns over decades.

The underlying edge, implied volatility above realised volatility, is well documented. Retail iron condors on short-dated options, with their costs and timing, may not match an index, so test your own rules.

Questions

When should I close an iron condor early?
Many traders close at around half the maximum profit, taking most of the premium while cutting the time exposed to a large move. Others hold to expiry for the full premium.
Can I trade iron condors on Nifty?
Yes, Nifty and Bank Nifty options are liquid enough, and weekly expiries make short-dated condors popular. Margin rules and charges in India change the arithmetic, so check them first.
What is an iron condor?
A four-option position: a short call and a short put either side of the price, protected by a long call and a long put further out. It profits when the market stays between the short strikes.
What is the maximum loss on an iron condor?
The gap between a short strike and its long strike, minus the premium collected.
Is an iron condor better than a short straddle?
It takes in less premium but caps the worst case, which a straddle does not.
