Nifty 50

Beginner

Also calledNiftyNIFTYNifty50NSE Nifty

The benchmark index of India's National Stock Exchange, tracking 50 of the largest companies listed on it.

What it means

The Nifty 50 is weighted by free-float market value, so the biggest companies move it most, and banks and financial firms make up the largest share. Its base is 1,000 points on 3 November 1995. You cannot buy the index itself: traders use Nifty futures and options, and investors use index funds and ETFs that follow it.

Example

One lot of Nifty futures or options has been 65 units since January 2026, so a 100-point move in the index is worth ₹6,500 per lot.

In practice

The Nifty is the first chart most Indian traders open, because it sets the tone for everything else. A stock trade is easier when the index is moving the same way, so many traders check the Nifty's trend and key levels before looking at individual shares.

It is also traded directly through futures and options, which are among the most active index contracts in the world. Its weekly options expire on Tuesdays, and activity builds through the week towards that day.

What to watch for

A handful of heavyweight companies can move the index while most shares do the opposite. Options on it lose value quickly in the last days before expiry, which catches out buyers who are right about direction but late.
